Legend has it a Spanish Galleon sank off the coast a few hundred years ago and the only survivors were the cargo…horses. The herds roam wild on Assateague island, now all state and national park. We thought it worth a trip.
Oooh, how nice to feel a chill in the air! Mi-guy didn’t seem to mind the cold, and I loved being able to bundle him up!
We had a great little set up. Our Mutha Hubba has traveled the world, and now graced the beach at Assateague, too.
Around 2:30 am Dave and I awoke to a banging around outside of the tent…could it be? Wild horses were raiding our camp! I had to run out and save the cooking supply box, so I grabbed my camera and snapped a shot of the invaders. They hung around for a while, nosed the tent, then left us a couple reminders that they had visited.
The next morning this is what I woke up to. A happy camper, literally! I’m glad Milo slept well that first night, because on the second day he became slightly weary of the endless wind, sun and sand. Maybe a one-day trip is better suited for a 5 monther?
Breakfast over the open flame. Ham, egg and cheese sandwiches of course! My father taught me well:)

We let Mi-guy roll around for a while on the ground, then walked him out to the beach. While he napped in the car (out of the breeze) Dave and I played a rousing game of war -the rules of which we improvised for lack of memory– and bet with candy corn (1 pt), peanut m&m’s (5 pts) and hot tamales (10 pts).
Ponies, ponies. What a cool island! Here is another visitor. She came near, but not in to our camp like her bandit companions.
So, this was our big hike of the trip…and, um, this is as far as we got! As we prepared to head out to the lighthouse a couple looked at us with Milo and warned, “There is a swarm of mosquitos in the woods on the way. They are THICK.” I believed them, as they were both still brushing the birds off of their backs and arms. I turn into an emotionally unstable teenager when surrounded by mosquitos, so we opted out.
Our picnic on the beach was much more lovely than a lighthouse anyway. We enjoyed an assortment of breads, meats, cheese and fruit. The winning combo was sourdough with peppered turkey, brie and raspberries!
My boy is ticklish…like his mom. I love making him laugh, and I’ve never felt more funny:)
Seriously, could this kid be any cuter? I had no idea when I snagged that great Patagonia vest at Kid-to-Kid for $2.99 that orange would be his color!
What is that lumpy orange stuff over the fire? Oh, camping fondue? Interesting… No, really, after it got hot enough, the cheddar fondue turned out great. I don’t know if Emile Henry was made for open flames, but it cleaned up perfectly, so it may be a new go-to camping pot!
Mmmm. S’mores made with Le Petit Écoliers. A great way to end a great day, and the trip. We headed out after another ham, egg and cheese.
