Cloth Diaper Debacle
July 20, 2011
Don’t worry that I titled this post, then googled the word “debacle” to make sure of its meaning. “Sudden and ignominious failure; a fiasco.” Dang, now I have to google “ignominious.”
Now, don’t get me wrong…cloth diapering has not been a fiasco or a failure at all. From the time we put Milo in his Bum Genius at a week old, both Dave and I were happy with the process (and the couple thousand dollar savings…and never rarely running out.) Milo wore the same two-dozen, one-size, BG 3.0 diapers until we tried potty training (So, for twenty-one months!) Then when we took a break from that, the BG gave him a rash. So, I chatted with a friend who recommended a different cleaning method. The rash immediately went away, but unfortunately, so did the waterproofing.
And therein lies the fiasco. I don’t know if it was changing detergents or simply the two-years of use that did them in. But in a matter of about six weeks washings, my plans to use our same diapers for Mister Eliot were ruined with the diaper covers.
I have 48 perfectly wonderful microfiber inserts and 24 completely useless BG covers. Investing another $300 in diapers isn’t in the budget right this second, and I really don’t need the whole diaper, just the cover! BG said they can’t sell the cover alone, and the website has clearance seconds…for $10.00 each.
Some friends loaned us a couple of their Kawaii Diapers to try (pictured on Eliot above) and they seem to work perfectly well. But, the warranty is only 90 days (vs. 1 year on the BG) and they are so much less expensive (which is awesome) that I wonder about their life expectancy (which is worrisome).
So, instead of having one baby in cloth diapers, as I imagined I would at this point, I’ve got two in disposables! Classic. Expensive. How do you disposable diaper people handle that weekly money suck?! We’ve got to solve this problem, and fast.
In the meantime, though, how cute is this boy? Seriously.
