Confession: I am an original art snob.
It’s my mom’s fault. She has some deep-seeded thing against prints (and stucco), and she passed it on to me (with a few, special exceptions). I think it serves me well, because I have made a point of appreciating, and collecting original art for my home. Though more of an investment than prints, most of our paintings were reasonably priced, and all have meaning. I gave Dave a commissioned watercolor as a wedding gift, and we forgo traditional souvenirs when on big vacations, and bring home a painting instead. So, when it came time to think about art for the nursery, original paintings were on the list of necessaries.
When we were preparing for Milo’s arrival, I fell in love with a piece on the wall of Porcupine Grille. I contacted the artist (who happened to also be a friend from high school) and because his paintings would be featured for another week or two in the restaurant, he whipped up a second, similar painting for me to move across the country two days later.
It was then that we decided we’d like to buy a piece for each child to hang in their room, and then take with them into their adult lives.
This is a long story, eh? Get to the point already!
So, fast forward to three weeks ago. I was 10 months+ pregnant, had been looking and looking for a painting that I loved for Eliot, and nothing had struck me. Then, fantastic Caitlin posted about her studio Spring Cleaning and there it was: Eliot’s painting! Love at first sight! Bada bing, bada boom, it arrived the day before he did.
I love it! How cool are those quirky little birds? And the mustard blocks with hole-punch polka-dots. Not to mention the perfect first-day-of-summer blue for my solstice baby.
I finally hung it this week, and it fits right in (in a totally unexpected, not-really-made-to-go-there sort of way, which is my design style.) My mom said the paintings look like a big brother and a little brother. I didn’t set out looking for another bird painting, but that’s what found me. And everything is cooler with birds anyway, right?
I am a fan of real, original art in the nursery, not just alphabet stencils and character vinyl, although everything has it’s place.
What about you? What do you love on nursery walls (besides stripes:)?
