Oliver + S Raglan Tee Pattern Review // Stretch Yourself
January 15, 2013

If you have children and you like to sew, you’ve no doubt heard of Oliver + S. I first noticed the sweet paper-doll packaging at a cozy quilt shop in Salt Lake City when I was pregnant with Milo. The designs are refreshing, hearkening back to the days when children played barefoot on the grass and jump-roped on the driveway. Most of the patterns are for woven material, but this adorable Field Trip Raglan Tee is a great basic tee to make with knits. I’ve already made my boys three of these each, and see no sign of stopping!

Oliver + S patterns are available in both digital and print copies. We received and are giving away a PDF copy of the Field Trip Pattern (including the raglan tee and the cargo pants!) The tiling on this pattern is different than any I’ve ever seen, with each pattern piece contained on it’s own page, or group of pages, rather than all of them taping together to make one huge sheet. It took me a few minutes to figure out what was going on (at first I thought I was missing  a bunch of corners) but once I figured it out, I really appreciated the segregation of the pieces. I could fit together just the tee pattern first, and leave all of the cargo pattern for later use (I used the cargo pattern, sans pockets for Milo’s Fireman Sam costume.)

The pattern instructions are clear and simple. This tee is a great project for a beginner! The pieces all fit just right, and in seven seams the whole tee is ready to go! For all of the shirts I’ve made my boys so far using this pattern, I refashioned men’s tee shirts from our refashion pile, cutting the bodice and sleeve hems on the original finished hems of the tees, to eliminate that finishing step (super lazy genius, right?) Milo’s tee is cut to size 3T, and Eliot’s to size 18-24 m (which is a little big, but he’s growing like crazy.) It’s fun to be able to switch up the fabrics on the sleeves and neckband to make a classic baseball tee look. I’ve also made one with all the same color, and the cut of the tee is still just so cute!

Oliver + S gets it right. I love their professional styling, clear branding, thoughtful designs and simple instructions. Their patterns are timeless, and the Field Trip Raglan Tee is a must-have basic for curious and active little kiddos like mine.
