For some reason, finishing my 27th year has inspired some sort of reflection. Actually, I was searching online about 30th birthday ideas (my husband and older sis both will hit this landmark in 2010) and I came across THIS video interview of Kate Hudson with Rachel Ray. Random, I know. I sat there watching it and was like, “What!!! Kate Hudson is only 30?? Not that I thought she was old or anything, but…I’m almost 30 and she looks so put together and must have starred in How to Lose A Guy in 10 Days when she was, like…younger than I am now! And, she was so cute in that movie. She wore dresses on weekdays and looked comfortable in high heels! I bet she wears high heels all the time. With jeans. And lipstick, too.” And then I was stuck. Sucked in to the realization that there are a few, possibly quite ridiculous things that I feel are an important piece of growing up for me. Or being a “grown-up woman.” Or something. I haven’t yet explored this completely, but two things that came to me without thinking I already mentioned:
1. Wearing high heels comfortably as a part of normal life and walking in them without feeling like I may tip over at any moment.
2. Wearing lipstick without feeling like I just finished a dance company concert (Churchill and Skyline), half-time as a Skyline La Nichée (yes, I wore the spandex and fake hair in 99-00) or Spring Concert with Clayton Productions (with whom I performed for 6 years!).
So, that’s all I have so far. This shouldn’t be too bad!! I have three years to work on these. Really though, I am opening myself up to what is quite possibly a huge “bucket list” of tasks, changes, habits, skills and accomplishments with a ticking deadline of February 9th, 2013. I’ll try to be practical with my commitments (as you can see by those super important things I’ve outlined thus far.) I’m already off and running…well, actually just walking-but that’s all I ask- on the first one. Today I acquired the most perfect and wonderful pair of heels I’ve seen, let alone worn, in a long time thanks to THIS discount card, a birthday gift card from my in-laws, and “1 for every year and 5 for love” from Mamo and Poppa. Thank you Mike, Melanie, Mamo and Poppa!!! I wore them around the store, in the car and grocery shopping at Trader Joe’s on the way home, and then for a few minutes in front of the mirror, admiring my new, and hopefully stable, height!
Okay, I also put them on again after a couple hours because I was in the closet grabbing my PJ’s and spied them on the shelf and I was actually a little startled by how cute they are, and I had to put them back on for a few minutes just because. I think I am ready to be a heel wearer. Thirty is going to be great.
Now, It’s too bad my Sephora Beauty Insider’s Birthday Gift was for eyes and not lips. I’m on my own to pick a first daring lip shade for casual wear. Any suggestions?
