Sundays are funny around here. We attend church meetings weekly, but not until 3 pm. So, we have all morning to have adventures of a semi-spiritual sort. Usually that means a simple family outing. Last week we visited the Lincoln Memorial again (it never gets old!), and wandered around the surrounding grounds. We happened upon a small pond that we hadn’t visited before, and Milo was in heaven with all of the ducks! We fed them corn puffs, since that was all I had in the bag.
This week we returned armed with bread, and boy, what fun we had!
On the way to the pond, we spotted some squirrels. Squirrels come in second to ducks as Milo’s very favorite animals. Lucky for us, there are a million in the east, and one even lives in our tree. There is no shortage of entertaining rodents around.
We started small, sending off a little chunk of bread into the open water. Two mallards headed right over and took advantage of the free meal.
Within one minute we had about thirty ducks pining for the fistfuls of bread we were hurling at them!
One of Milo’s throws came up slightly short, and this brave female hopped right out of the pond to get it.
With Dave’s help, Milo lured her closer with another piece on the ground…
…then with one in hand…
…and she took it! If you zoom in, you can see little Milo’s whole finger between that beak! Luckily, he came out unscathed.
They were both pretty surprised!
I love little Milo’s face in this one, after his second out-of-the-hand feed.
Of course, not all of the bread went to the ducks. All that caring for wild animals can give a boy an appetite!
And, what do you know? We ran out of bread and returned to corn puffs. Next time, we’ll be even better prepared!
Although this little guy didn’t seem to mind too much getting a puff.
