Howdy. Monday again, huh?
We had a wonderful weekend. Friday and Saturday Dave got in his final hours of studying before this weeks exam, and then on Sunday before church we took a little (unconventional) family outing to celebrate Utah’s Pioneer Day.
Since I am sort of obsessed with the National Zoo, and once again a FONZ member (thanks mom!) I get all the emails about the zoo’s happenings. Including the news of State Farm saving the Kid’s Farm. Although our Sundays are usually more low key, I thought this would be a fun, free way to have some family time and talk a little about the pioneers. Dave tried to tell me that the pioneers did not have cows, donkeys, or goats when they hit the Salt Lake Valley…but I’m pretty sure they did. And if not, at least they had them later, and that’s good enough for me!
I think the pioneers loved pizza, too, right? Milo was so proud of himself holding his very own plate.
We got up close and personal with the cows. Milo got to pet Tulip, the black and white holstein, and the farm volunteer told us all about her. Turns out Holsteins are a dairy breed but–get this, the udder doesn’t develop until the cows have a calf to nurse! He said “Look close, and you can see her teet, but she hasn’t calved, so doesn’t have an udder.” And all of the sudden I related to dear Tulip so well! All you yet-to-be mom’s out there who have dreams of a more “developed” chest. Just you wait!
This morning, Dave and his two law school buddies (who happen to also be the husbands of two of my best friends) got ready to head down south for the Virginia BAR. We three wives had gotten together and packed them a surprise basket filled with travel and hotel snacks: SMART water, Smarties, TJ’s School House Cookies, Happy Cola, Big League Gum, a stress ball for each and some other goodies. We also put together a funny little six-pack of root beer with mini 100 Grands and a leisure magazine with a note for them not to open it until AFTER the BAR on Wednesday. I think they’re well prepared and will do great!
Having them get into the car and leave took a huge weight off of MY shoulders! I think just knowing that the next time I see Dave he will officially be finished with school-hopefully forever- allows me to breathe easier. Studying for this test has been a beast, and I can’t wait for him to get back to LIFE with US! We’ve begun a little summer bucket-list…fun times ahead, I’m sure.
While he’s gone, I’ve got the boys to myself. My goals are (in order of priority):
1. Keep everyone alive
2. Avoid burns, cuts, smashing of heads and other serious injuries
3. Get some food and drink into all three of us at least a couple times each day
4. Have fun and keep everyone happy
Today we hit up the Lee District Spray Park, which is awesome. Although the heat wave continues here, it’s much more bearable in the water.
Milo is pretty excited about his new Lightning McQueen water shoes ( water shoes are a requirement at the park…and these were the only one’s I could find!) Eliot and I also got a little wet. And I dared wear a bathing suit. When it’s five million degrees, I throw my inhibitions to the wind.
So, now the boys are sort of napping. “Sort of” because Milo is actually playing in his room and occasionally knocking to tell me he is still awake. At some point he may actually fall asleep, we’ll see when. Eliot is snoozing to the sounds of the ocean waves and I am geared up for a couple hours of cutting out dresses and such. My house is actually very peaceful right now…even with Milo’s singing loudly to himself through the wall.
It will be a good week, I think. A good week indeed.
