I had a baby, did you hear? Yeah, I know, old news (like FIVE months old. Where has the time gone?!). But last week I finally finished sending out Eliot’s birth announcements. I began working on these when I was 7 months pregnant. That was when I printed the first color, which included the woodblock lettering at the top and Eliot’s name inside.
When he was just a couple weeks old, I set the type for the details of his birth. And then a couple months later I got back up to print them. Then I choose which of the fantastic newborn photos I would include. I ordered the prints, the envelopes, and a return address stamp, and bought some calligraphy pens to address them, and after all of that I sent them off. Whew. You can see why it took five months.
I saw an idea for this clever trifold play on words in a letterpress book my sister gave me after I printed her wedding suite. I instantly fell in love with it. Ensuring the printing and folding was accurate took more measuring than I am used to. It was a good practice in attention to detail.
I affixed super cool Pixar stamps before dropping them at the post office. I used all of the Lightning and Buzz ones up before moving on to less boyish characters like the UP guy. He’s cool, but not as cool as Buzz.
So, on another note my calligraphy is awful (please forgive me if you got a card in the mail and couldn’t read your name.) I climbed into bed after using my new pens for about 20 minutes, and told Dave I’m not very good. “Oh, after 20 minutes you’re lettering isn’t perfect? That’s weird.” He said. I guess I do need to give it some time. And maybe take a lesson or something. I want to write like this. Maybe I bought the wrong pens? Mine are hard tip nib something or other calligraphy ones. Do I need a brush tip pen? Anyone know?
Back to the announcement: Welcome to the world not-so-baby Eliot! I adore you.
