In March, I escaped into many different worlds through books. While this is one of the biggest benefits of reading, I also recognized partway through the month how I was using reading as a coping mechanism for some bigger mental health struggles. Episode 140 of my podcast shares more. This is just a friendly reminder that mental health is important, and if you need help, don’t hesitate to reach out to your family, friends, or a doctor.
This magical series has been such a fun set for me to read aloud with my almost-12-year-old. We were both sucked right into the story, and during March read books 1-3. We’re beginning 4 now!
I loved this story of sisterhood, independence, and the reality of how reputation can have such an impact on experience, regardless of truth. The characters were interesting and I loved how the story ended.
As my business interest shifts to hosting more in-person retreats and gatherings, I have been digging into the art of hosting and structuring these events. This book is like a bible for event hosts–even those just hosting friends for dinner. I am already thinking so differently about how to lead, guide, and create the events with more intention and love.
I have heard about this short and sweet book over and over, yet this was the first time I had picked it up and read it! I felt each chapter deeply resonating. So much of what she shares are thoughts and ideas I have had myself in my life, and I love the affirmation that we all feel some similar tugs for stillness, fulfillment, and joy in life.
After being vaccinated, Dave and I ventured back to a movie theater this month. In addition to being deeply healing emotionally to do something so pre-covid normal, we also loved the movie we chose: Chaos Walking. After seeing it, I ordered all three books in the series that the movie was based on. This one was a great, deeper dive into the wild, post-apocalyptic settlement on an alien planet.
In book two of the Chaos Walking Series, the story diverges entirely from what was in the movie. The struggle becomes even more real, and the adventure feels fast paced and urgent. I love the concept of this book–the patriarchal vulnerability and power hunger feels very relatable.
By book three in the series, I was so invested. I finished the series loving the emphasis on loyalty, love, and surrender. Such a fascinating fictional world, people, and culture.
Probably my favorite read of the month, I devoured this memoir of Erica Baurmeister’s home renovation. She is already one of my favorite authors, and seeing her renovation through the lens of lessons, stories, and remaking ourselves and our relationships felt so relatable for me, especially after our own home renovation adventures.
