Lawn Care
When we bought our first house a few years ago, we wanted a huge yard. We settled onto a half-acre with a giant lawn and a scattering of trees. After about a month, we realized that we had no idea what we were doing in terms of lawn care. It wasn’t as easy as it looked to keep our grass green, strong, and growing healthy! I’m excited to partner with Scotts® to share some fall lawn care tips to keep your yard looking great all year round.
In our new home, we inherited a pretty terrible lawn. It had been neglected for what looked like years. Now that our interior renovations are finished, we are ready to focus on the lawn care and landscaping.
Here are a few basic tips for low maintenance fall lawn care. With just a little bit of effort, you will keep a beautiful lawn growing all the time.
Fall Lawn Care
Fall is the perfect time to begin your regular lawn care and maintenance, especially if your yard has been neglected. The combination of cooler weather and more moisture in many climates helps the roots of new seed dig deep and the old grass gain strength. Scotts® has a variety of products to help target each of your lawn’s problem areas and repair and maintain a healthy yard.
Seed & Feed
Our lawn is currently a mixture of bare patches from constant construction, wild weeds from years of neglect, and thin grass trying its hardest to survive. This is a great time to seed and feed the lawn to strengthen the existing grass so that as it grows, it will thin out and begin eliminating the weeds.
I used Scotts® Turf Builder® WinterGuard® Fall Lawn Food to help build deep, strong roots in my existing grass and deliver nutrients that will help repair damage from the summer heat and activity. It can be applied to any type of grass, which is great because I have no idea what mine is (or used to be!). The Lawn Food helps the grass absorb and use moisture and will continue working all winter long.
Overseed
Our thin lawn and bare areas also need new grass seed to build the whole yard back up into a nice, thick lawn. Scotts® Turf Builder® Grass Seed Sun & Shade Mix® is a perfect product to overseed your lawn in the fall. It grows quickly and aggressively and thickens into a hearty lawn.
This particular product is coated with technology that allows it to absorb 2x the amount of water than uncoated seed, which jumpstarts the seed growth. The versatility of this mix allows it to grow and spread even in dense shade or full sun, which makes it super low maintenance and easy for homeowners to spread it all over the existing lawn.
Easy to Spread
I spread both products easily using the Scotts® Turf Builder® EdgeGuard® DLX Broadcast Spreader. It is easy to fill and push and has the added benefit of being able to turn off one side so that you can spread seed along a patio or flowerbed without spraying seeds onto the wrong area.
I was able to find all of these products at my local Tractor Supply, where we also looked at the baby chicks and got excited about getting our own backyard chickens in a couple more months. If you don’t have a Tractor Supply nearby, you can visit TractorSupply.com to find your favorite Scotts® products!
Lawn Care Year Round
Now that I am set for the fall, I am excited to continue to learn more about the basics of lawn care for every season. It looks like with just a little maintenance each season, I will be able to transform my yard into a great space with a healthier, happier lawn. I love this seasonal lawn care guide from Scotts, along with all of their other great lawn care resources!
This spring, I plan to do some weed prevention, overseed bare spots again, and add lawn food again. In the summer, I will feed and seed again, easily spreading seed and fertilizer with the spreader.
I am excited to get started on the ongoing project of lawn care in our new home. I know that easy, regular maintenance is the best way to grow anything—including a lawn!
