#MunchkinMakerMamas Leather Clutch Workshop
March 28, 2016

#MunchkinMakerMamas Workshop- One Little Minute Blog-40#MunchkinMakerMamas Workshop- One Little Minute Blog-26Mother and Maker are two roles that I identify with fully, however sometimes the two feel at odds. That challenge was the inspiration behind creating this #MunchkinMakerMamas workshop in partnership with Munchkin. I met the brand at Alt Summit in January, and this idea hit me as an up-all-night thinking and planning inspiration. I imagined a craft workshop for moms where the kids could come along and be cared for in an on-site Kid Craft Center while moms had some creative time. I even pitched the idea complete with the hashtag title!#MunchkinMakerMamas Workshop- One Little Minute Blog-23 It was amazing to see the workshop come together so wonderfully, bringing moms from around the area–some even from a couple hours away– with their littles, to meet, craft, eat, and enjoy time together without the hassle of finding a sitter. The seats for the event were gone within a couple hours of being available, which told me this type of event is needed and wanted!

In this first workshop, the moms each created a caramel leather folded Date Night + Diaper Clutch, which turned out awesome for everyone. I want to share some of the details of the fun morning– the first in a mini-series I’m hosting this year.

The talented Melisa Mckinney photographed the event, and these photos she took really capture the delightful day! Look her up for beautiful images if you’re in the Austin area.
#MunchkinMakerMamas Workshop- One Little Minute Blog-3#MunchkinMakerMamas Workshop- One Little Minute Blog-4I chose The Paper + Craft Pantry as the venue because I love the owner, the lighting is beautiful, it’s a sweet local shop, and the separate but adjoining office space made a perfect on-site childcare room.

The workshop tables were set with the supplies and tools needed for the clutches. Each seat also had a Drink Pod with a bottle of water. I had just recently discovered these awesome drink holders that can clamp onto anything: strollers, bike handles, car seats, shopping carts, beach chairs…The possibilities are endless! I stuck one on my bucket bike and fell so in love I wanted every mom to have one!#MunchkinMakerMamas Workshop- One Little Minute Blog-7 #MunchkinMakerMamas Workshop- One Little Minute Blog-6Some simple flowers sat in multi-cups and requisite crafting chocolate in multi-bowls.
#MunchkinMakerMamas Workshop- One Little Minute Blog-8The Kids Craft Center was set up with all sorts of fun from Munchkin. These Galaxy Foam Playmats are so cool! I had never seen them before, and they are awesome! The foam pieces hook together to make a great big play area, and the center lights up with a touch, creating interactive entertainment for kids of all ages. The littlest ones could lay down and crawl around the middle, while the toddlers lit it up with their stomping feet. Everyone loved it.
#MunchkinMakerMamas Workshop- One Little Minute Blog-9Of course the classic White Hot Duck Tub was a favorite toy. I left it inflated but empty, and it was soon filled with kids and Mozart Magic Cubes. Perfect play area for littles. We also had crayons with coloring pages, and fruit loop necklaces for the making.

The Kids Craft Center was staffed by a local certified babysitter service and the sitters were amazing with the kids. Everyone was entertained, and for some of the moms this was their first time ever leaving their kids with someone besides family! A big milestone that went super smoothly.#MunchkinMakerMamas Workshop- One Little Minute Blog-10#MunchkinMakerMamas Workshop- One Little Minute Blog-20When moms checked their kids into the Kids Craft Center, each received a Miracle 360 Cup (my very favorite type of sippy and the only ones we use with Plum!) and a Snack Catcher filled with goldfish, both with their names on them for keeping straight among the other 15 kids. After my six years of mothering I’ve learned that a lot of trouble can be avoided if kids have a snack and a drink in hand!
#MunchkinMakerMamas Workshop- One Little Minute Blog-11We had kids from ages 3 weeks (who stayed with her mama, of course) up to age 5, with everything in between. #MunchkinMakerMamas Workshop- One Little Minute Blog-37Lunch for the kids happened on Lil’Apple Plates keeping the blueberries separate from the dino nuggets, from the apple sauce.

Once the kids were settled into the Kids Center, the moms found their seats and I introduced the craft: the Date Night + Diaper Clutch. I designed this no-sew leather clutch specifically for this event, and am really happy with how it turned out. The sides are boxy enough to allow for multiple diapers, wipes, and a changing pad. Or a phone, keys, wallet, and maybe a little scarf or lightweight cardigan for a night out. #MunchkinMakerMamas Workshop- One Little Minute Blog-12I love teaching. It feels like something I was made to do, and being in front of a group talking about things I love to do is a happy place for me. Hosting workshops has been such a natural fit to combine my love of teaching and my love of making, then adding the motherhood aspect into this one made it feel like a real success.

I gave everyone an overview of the craft (including some of my history as a pizza-box folder which I believe is where some of my three-dimensional design understanding began) then we got to work! Tracing the pattern, cutting it out, folding and sticking, and punching, and screwing until the whole thing looked just like the example.
#MunchkinMakerMamas Workshop- One Little Minute Blog-15 #MunchkinMakerMamas Workshop- One Little Minute Blog-13#MunchkinMakerMamas Workshop- One Little Minute Blog-16The tables of women were alive with chatter, people helping each other figure out the tricky parts, as I wandered the room troubleshooting and explaining further steps. We had moms further spread out onto the workshop floors, tracing and talking, and enjoying some creative time together.
#MunchkinMakerMamas Workshop- One Little Minute Blog-14 #MunchkinMakerMamas Workshop- One Little Minute Blog-17 #MunchkinMakerMamas Workshop- One Little Minute Blog-18Its so fun to see people making things they’ve never made before, and being so pleased with their new skills!
#MunchkinMakerMamas Workshop- One Little Minute Blog-19 #MunchkinMakerMamas Workshop- One Little Minute Blog-21 #MunchkinMakerMamas Workshop- One Little Minute Blog-22I also loved seeing some of the younger babes snuggled in their mamas arms while they worked. Maker Mama workshop indeed.
#MunchkinMakerMamas Workshop- One Little Minute Blog-25#MunchkinMakerMamas Workshop- One Little Minute Blog-24#MunchkinMakerMamas Workshop- One Little Minute Blog-2#MunchkinMakerMamas Workshop- One Little Minute Blog-5As people finished up their clutches, we dove into our lunch of Fricano’s Deli sandwiches (the cajun turkey is life-changing), salad, fruit + chips. I love a hearty, classic lunch, and crafting makes people hungry!
#MunchkinMakerMamas Workshop- One Little Minute Blog-27 #MunchkinMakerMamas Workshop- One Little Minute Blog-28Behind the curtain in the back we had set up a little diaper-changing area, which I unneeded up needing as well (when Plum had a blow-out that left her in her diaper alone for the rest of the afternoon!) This little corner was equipped with the Mist wipes warmer, and the brand-new Step diaper pail. It was just released, and while opening it up for the event I kept commenting about how great it was! The features include a new modern look, odor-locking technology, a fresh-smelling Arm & Hammer® scented disc, and the best, easy-to-open front and top to replace bags. Plus, Munchkin is planting a tree for every pail sold. We’re starting to potty train over here, but are using this pail until we’re done for sure.
#MunchkinMakerMamas Workshop- One Little Minute Blog-29#MunchkinMakerMamas Workshop- One Little Minute Blog-32As we were wrapping up, one of my favorite local food trucks, Bananarchy, delivered frozen-chocolate-and-sprinkle-dipped bananas made on colorful Lift spoons. Needless to say, they were a huge hit!

Then everyone took some final photos with the Munchkin Heart Photo Wall (made by sticking some Ice Heart Teethers to the wall) and got ready to head home.#MunchkinMakerMamas Workshop- One Little Minute Blog-30 #MunchkinMakerMamas Workshop- One Little Minute Blog-31 #MunchkinMakerMamas Workshop- One Little Minute Blog-34 #MunchkinMakerMamas Workshop- One Little Minute Blog-35#MunchkinMakerMamas Workshop- One Little Minute Blog-1We sent them from the workshop with a swag bag of goodies, including the items their child picked up in the Kid Craft Center, as well as a White Hot Ducky,  Ice Heart Teether, and the super fun Waterpede bath toy.

Partnering with Munchkin is such a perfect fit for this series. I’ve used and loved their products since I became a mother, and am over the moon to share them with other maker mamas. They are also so supportive of making lives easier and more enjoyable, creating inviting experiences to delight parent’s and babies, and “ridding the world of all things mundane” -from the Munchkin Mission Statement. This are all things I am on board with, and appreciate their willing collaboration on making this workshop great!
#MunchkinMakerMamas Workshop- One Little Minute Blog-36It was really a perfect day for me and my munchkin, too, who I loved bringing along and sharing the experience with. I can’t wait for the next Munchkin Maker Mamas workshop coming up in June, to share the fun with some more moms around!

The final episode this year of Live Free Creative The final episode this year of Live Free Creative Podcast dropped this morning: a look back at 2022 and an invitation to reflect.

Often, it is in the remembering and retelling of our own stories where meaning is made. With a little distance, we can usually see more clearly how our experiences have changed us. This self-awareness is a beautiful place from where we can step into the future with added clarity and hopefully a measure of compassion and peace.

Tune in on your favorite podcast app. 💛 #livefreecreativepodcast
This last week of the year is talked about like a This last week of the year is talked about like a Bermuda Triangle of time warp— I think it is the *perfect* time for reflection. Not hustle, goal-setting, or even planning (though I love a good plan😉).

This is the time to look back with clear and honest eyes on the challenges, joys, disappointments, and fulfillments of the last year and make some meaning of it all. Accepting who and where we are now with grace and love can help us proceed into the next right step with compassion and clarity.

2022 was one of my personal toughest. It was simultaneously filled with light and laughter. A beautiful mess. 💛

What was one of your favorite moments of the last year? Feel free to share below. I’d love to hear!
I’ve spent a long time curious about optimism- w I’ve spent a long time curious about optimism- what it really looks like and how it is evidenced in real life.

Learning about explanatory styles helped clarify some of the nuances of optimistic people acknowledging and accepting negative events and emotions without being taken down by them.

Optimism is not toxic positivity, it is the perspective that although negative things occur, they are usually temporary, impersonal and specific.

These illustrations can help you clarify the difference between how an optimist and a pessimist may describe positive and negative events— and listening to episode 217 of Live Free Creative Podcast can help with some practical ideas for building your optimism muscle. 💪😃

After over two decades of interest in and self-study of the ideas of happiness, progress, and what makes life worth living, it has been a dream come true to dive even deeper with the guidance of great professors, guest lecturers, and classmates. It is a ton of work, and also reminds me that most truly worthwhile things are. ❤️

Cheers to lifelong learning, growing, and flourishing! 🌱🌲

Let’s talk about OPTIMISM! 😊 Many people (fa Let’s talk about OPTIMISM! 😊

Many people (falsely) assume that optimism means ignoring negative events or emotions. Instead, optimism is the perspective with which one views negative emotions and events: as temporary, changeable, and impersonal.

For (very simple) example, when an optimistic person stubs her toe, she might think “Ouch! That hurts! That step came out of nowhere… I’ll look out for it next time.”

In contrast, a pessimist might stub her toe and think “Ouch! That hurts! Why do I always get hurt? I’m such a klutz.”

Optimistic people tend to see negative events as occasional, and positive events as the norm. They tune their attention to things that do or could go right, rather than giving all the weight to things that do or could go wrong.

Additionally, optimism can be LEARNED and PRACTICED, with amazing and beneficial outcomes on life satisfaction, relationships, and overall well-being.

Do you consider yourself more of an optimist or a pessimist?

Paper Person for LIFE ✌️ I write plans, lists Paper Person for LIFE ✌️

I write plans, lists, to-do’s, outlines, notes, dreams, memories, and stories on good old fashioned paper (preferably 80# cotton mohawk paper with a .3 muji pen 😉).

Did you know research shows that writing by hand (versus typing) activates different parts of the brain and can increase understanding, perception, memory, motor skills, and even creativity? While typing and tech definitely have their benefits, writing by hand, on paper, is still an important, valid, and (in my personal experience) cathartic experience.

If you’ve been around a while, you know @golden.coil is my favorite, (sister-owned) customizable planner and notebook company. 📒

Who else has a paper brain like me? 🙋🏻‍♀️
What expectations do you have for the holidays? Or What expectations do you have for the holidays? Or for the New Year?

I’d love to hear about them. And invite you to consider how developing appreciate (instead of/alongside) expectation can build your well-being and positive emotions.

Listen to Episode 216 of #livefreecreativepodcast for a more in-depth discussion. 💚
Expectations are normal— but are they helpful? Expectations are normal— but are they helpful?

Unmet expectations lead to disappointment on the one end of the spectrum and resentment or even anger on the other.

In contrast, appreciation increases positivity, motivation, and resilience.

Neither expectations nor appreciation cost us anything… so which do we want to intentionally invite into our lives? 💛

One wall, one quart of green paint, three hours of One wall, one quart of green paint, three hours of procrastinating folding laundry: a gorgeous new office space. 💚💁🏻‍♀️

Sometimes we need to JUST GO FOR IT when the urge to improve strikes, even if it doesn’t make sense. Pausing a hundred small to-do’s so you can accomplish one with long-lasting impact feels amazing.

(I think picking up this incredible @thicketdesign serpent and butterfly painting from @frameofmindrva was the push I needed to make it happen. 😍)

What small home project would make the biggest positive impact for you right now?

Connection builds resilience, reduces stress, and Connection builds resilience, reduces stress, and makes us happier! ✨

While this last year (um…2-3 years? 🫠) has been difficult on many levels, it has also felt very connective. Weird how challenges can do that: build meaning and strengthen relationships.

Our family has leaned on simple habits routines to deepen our connection: nightly family dinner, walking to school together, weekly dates for Dave and me, family vacation and weekend getaways to leave it all behind and simply have fun together!

What are you doing to intentionally build/maintain your connection to those who matter most to you?

(Thank you @mollyhunterphotography for capturing our family so beautifully!)

In a lot of ways, 2022 has been one of the toughest years we’ve experienced. From health challenges, family tragedies, and heartbreak to difficult personal growth, we have been just barely keeping our heads above water.

This Christmastime, I am grateful for the hope and peace of accepting and integrating what is, exercising non-judgement and optimism in the face of obstacles, and the power of close friendships and relationships to ease the load. 💛

Sending love and light to you this season, whether hope-filled or heart-wrenching or a little of both. ✨
