Before the idea of doing a totally original design for cousin Megan’s Senior Prom dress, she showed me this Rodarte for Target dress that she had snagged on clearance. She actually bought two, one that fit and another, larger, just for the fabric that she knew would be needed to make it wearable. I say she had some vision, since my first reaction to the dress was sort of fashion confusion. Where on earth did that black satin bow halter come from?? Yuck!
The gathered, swirly skirt is adorable, and I do love the floral lace. With Megan’s 18th birthday party coming up (tonight!!) I thought it would be a good time to create a simple and beautiful dress from this great clearance find.
It was genius for her to snag the extra dress, because I used almost all of it’s fabric to build a v-necked bodice from that sparse halter and add another layer to the skirt. I worked with the lining and lace separately, leaving the end result practically seamless. You would never know that this dress had not been made this way!
The zipper stayed in place along the side, and I actually left the bodice separate from the sleeve to the top of the zipper, so it would be easier to take on and off. A little hook and eye keeps the couple inches of fabric in place. Again, I finish a dress for Megan and think “I should make something like this for me!!” I’ll take a closer look at the Target clearance next time I’m in:)
Happy Birthday Lace Lovely Megan.
