Project Repurpose The Wardrobe: Too Short to Too Cute
May 27, 2010
Thank you for all of your nice comments about my first wardrobe renewal!! A few of you mentioned wanting to be able to sew better. Here’s my advice: sew, sew, sew! Most of my favorite creations are born of some ridiculous mistakes! Take the ruffle shirt, for example. My plan was to leave the front plain with just the ruffles hanging. However, the weight of the ruffles pulled the top open wide…revealing all of my not very perfect stitching!! By purposely flipping the top ruffle out, and then (more carefully) stitching a binding to the collar edge I made it work. Then added the buttons to support the fabric-heavy top. And, I love it (and some of you did, too!) This particular project, in fact, would be really fun for learning to sew, because you waste no money buying fabric. So, go for it! I’d love to see what you are working on!!
Here’s my second repurpose:
I loved this tee when I bought it at American Apparel three years ago. I still love it. However, the years of washing and drying have shortened it. Or maybe I wear my pants lower. Or possibly my spine stretched when I got hugely pregnant. Anyhow, it was too short to wear alone, but who wants to wear a shirt under another full shirt? I mean, I do the tank with shrug thing all the time (maybe too often) but a tank under a tee that only shows at the hem? And when it’s DC HOT?
So, how about DC HAUTE? I simply snipped down the front, did a little pinning, ironing, and a few stitches later I’ve got a totally transformed top! Thanks to Melanie for the great kitchen towels that came tied with this awesome cotton ribbon. It made perfect trim! Amazing what a few details will do. My wardrobe feels a little better already!
