So, I never knew that some girls don’t sew. I just grew up with a sewing machine and serger in the laundry room, my mom taking us to sewing lessons, and whipping up costumes and prom dresses all the time. It was part of life…and obviously still is!
When my friend Cindy told me she had wanted to learn how to sew but never had a chance, I jumped at the opportunity to share this most wonderful hobby with her!
We began by talking about what project she might like to begin with. Not a pillow case or a pair of pajama pants, like I started with, but something she’d really like to have! Immediately, she came up with the idea of doing matching summer dresses for her daughter and step-daughter. A perfect project to start with!
After session one we had discussed fabric, thread, notions and she had chosen this darling yellow gingham with matching ric rac.
After session two, she had learned all of the buttons, knobs and wheels on the machine, knew how to thread the bobbin and the machine, had sewn all of the pieces together, and was half-way through the ruched bodice.
After session three she had finished the ruching, added a lining, hemmed and added the ric rac detail to the skirt and sleeves…
…and dress one of two was complete!
Isn’t it adorable? I’ll definitely sit with her for the next dress, but the beauty of jumping into a fun, though maybe not typically “beginner” project, is that you learn so much along the way! I did, too!
