Come with me on a short driving tour of Northern Virginia, Three days POST snow storm…(the first one…we’ve not yet dug the 6 inches off of our car since today’s blizzard.)
A NEIGHBORHOOD STRET: yucky, sticky, two or more inches of the slushy, dirty snow that each car just moves around as they try to maintain some traction getting through. Plowed maybe once or twice during the night. Snow piled on both sides making it feel like a back country road. We are THREE DAYS POST STORM, but hey…it’s a neighborhood. Apparently low priority.
A MAIN STREET: Hmm. Looks surprisingly like the neighborhood street. No lane lines visible. Lots of tracks and some thicker patches. Piles and piles on both sides of the street. The plow seems to have taken a few liberties in reducing the left turn lanes into snow banks. He must have been in a hurry to get to the real important streets and get those nice and clean…
THE FREEWAY: Wait a second. Are we really on the freeway? Where have the plows been plowing for the last three days?? The left lane seems okay. This right lane-slash-half-of-the-shoulder looks pretty clear…but those two center lanes are crazy! Thick ice stuck in broken patches. Undrivable. Luckily, EVERYTHING is canceled, so we really don’t need to go anywhere at all.
OUR TURF: We have been essentially snowed in to our complex since last Friday. Quickly shoveled walks have made it easy to get between buildings and visit with our huge bunch of amazing friends, who also happen to be neighbors. Dave, Milo and I thought we had left our winters of snow piles behind in New England, but we were mistaken! We simply brought them with us.
The piles of snow outside our window are beautiful and sparkling…and have allowed Dave to stay home with us all day, every day for almost a week. So I won’t complain!
(Even if this last storm did seem like SnOverkill!!)
