Leather Blanket Strap DIY
June 6, 2015

I have another fun, easy leather project for you.

Since you’ve gathered tools to make the Leather Wrapped Planter, and the No Sew Glasses Case, I thought we should continue playing with this fun material! This simple Leather Blanket Strap is a project I have wanted to make for a couple years. I am reminded of the idea every time we have to haul our blankets to the park, a picnic, a park, the pool, a concert, the beach, or on a hike…so lots of reminders! With everything else I have in my hands, it’s so nice to have the blanket neatly rolled and slung across a shoulder, or better yet, across one of the kids’ shoulders, as we make our way to the destination.Leather Blanket Strap DIY-One Little Minute Blog-18Leather Blanket Strap DIY-One Little MinuteThe strap is a simple concept, and could me made of fabric, nylon webbing, or even rope.

I love using leather for the durability, and beauty. The steps are super simple, and the result really cool and useful. Let’s get started!

You’ll need:
78″-84″ of leather, either 1 x 78″ strap, 2 x 40″ straps, or 3 x 28″
a Leather Hole Punch + Leather Rivets and a hammer
or a sewing machine with leather needle

To rivet punch two holes through both layers of the leather and then set rivets. To sew, use piece of double-stick tape to hold the leather in place while you sew through both layers.Leather Blanket Strap DIY-One Little Minute Blog-13These aren’t actually rivets, rather eyelets (which just means they have a hole.) Either work, and this is what I had on hand! The rivets will go on just the same way.Leather Blanket Strap DIY-One Little Minute Blog-14After you connect your pieces making one long strap, fold each end over 4″ and rivet or sew the ends into loops.Leather Blanket Strap DIY-One Little Minute Blog-15The easiest way to thread the strap through so that you can place a blanket through either side is to turn the loop INSIDE OUT around the strap, then again, so that you end up with the main strap threaded through, forming a big loop at each end of the strap.
