Are you a podcast person, yet? If not, friend, please get on board. The new soundtrack of my runs, road trips, and household duties has switched (from 80’s hits and broadway classics) to self-development and inspirational podcasts in the last few months, and I love the change! These are my very favorite podcasts for regular listening.
Why Podcasts?
Spending time learning and thinking during otherwise monotonous duties has been a great way to feel like I’m accomplishing something new and important rather than just another load of laundry.
I share about these favorite podcasts on Instagram Stories regularly, and thought I would update this favorites list, as well for easy reference.
Awesome with Alison
I love Alison. She is one of my friends. in real life, we have worked together on a few projects including The Brand School Audio Courses. And I love her podcast.
Alison is cheeky, open, hilarious, and truly committed to teaching meaningful lessons and principles in her weekly podcast. She doesn’t just want to chat away the time, she wants you to learn something that will make you feel a little more awesome about yourself, your life, and your dreams.
I especially appreciate her gratitude practices, and how she talks about doing what you want even if other people are doing it.
The Life Coach School with Brook Castillo
Dave introduced me to The Life Coach School last year and I was immediately hooked. I am a self-development junkie, and I felt like Brooke taught me a whole new language to talk about ideas that I had already felt, but didn’t knew how to describe.
Each week focuses on one particular area of mind-coaching, or working on your thoughts in order to improve your emotions and more fully embrace your life. She breaks down how the circumstances of our lives don’t matter nearly as much as the thoughts we create about them. Those thoughts in turn create our emotions, which make up the feeling of our life experiences.
Friends, it is so good. I recommend staring at the verrrry begining and working through the episodes from oldest to most recent in order to get the basic principles that she discusses.
Young House Love Has a Podcast
I started listening to John and Sherry of Young House Love about six months before we decided to move to Richmond. And then I realize they live nearby, which has made listening lately even more fun.
Their podcast chronicles their home design and renovation journey (right now they are restoring a historic beach house and duplex in Cape Charles.) and I love hearing about their experience. The shows are relatable, casual, and funny.
They play radio games and share design tips. It’s a fun, lighthearted listen. Episode 8 is a must-listen if you are a blogger or want an inside look at blogging. I really have enjoyed every episode, and think it has been especially fun as we are in the middle of our own historic renovation.
Revisionist History
Anyone else a major Malcolm Gladwell fangirl?
I’ve read everything he’s written (this and this being all-time favorites), and I was so excited to hear he was creating a podcast. He does it in true Malcolm style, asking the best questions, then turing them into an incredible story.
Each episode of the first season takes a closer look at something in history that might need a new explanation. I felt like I was in a history class crossed with a great sociology discussion and I’ve been thinking about them since. Season two was equally as good, and now we wait patiently for season three.
The Tim Ferris Show
This was one of the first podcasts I had recommended to my by my friend Catelyn, and I have loved some episodes and been really uninterested in others, but those I love have more than made up for the ones I skip.
Tim Ferris is a serial entrepreneur, author, and efficiency expert, and he interviews top performers in all fields to discover the habits and traits that make them great. My favorite episodes are these: Tony Robbins on Achievement verses Fulfillment, Brene Brown on Vulnerability (duh), and Alex Honnold Assessing Risk and Living Without a Rope (this guy is so laid back and unpretentious I loved him.)
3 in 30
I love these quick, simple episodes about motherhood with Rachel Nielsen. One thing she really emphasizes is the actionable takeaways from each episode. She interviews different guests each week who share tips and ideas surround a variety of motherhood topics.
It is a great one when I feel like I need a little more intentionality in my motherhood. I like the idea of having something specific to focus on, and three tips feels like a manageable amount. So many motherhood topics can feel overwhelming, and I love how this one is broken down.
Rise Together
I have recently discovered this couples podcast by Rachel and Dave Hollis and I am really enjoying it! Rachel wrote the best-selling book Girl, Wash Your Face, that I really enjoyed, and she also records a regular interview-style podcast called Rise.
I really like the dynamic of a husband and wife together talking about relationships, and they are both funny, candid, and relatable. I appreciate some positive couple inspiration in my life, as my relationship with (my own) Dave is one of my life’s sweetest joys. And it’s always nice to have some additional perspective.
There are a million podcasts, and these are the ones I find myself listening to regularly and even sometimes WAITING FOR THE MOMENT THE NEW EPISODE POSTS each week! They are my motivation to go on a 3-mile-run and got me through the last several hours of our 7000 mile road trip this summer.
I’ll regularly update this list as I discover new shows, and hope you’ll chime in with your favorites in the comments!
