Whoo wee. Today’s beautiful weather set us up for a fantastic day on the National Mall. We walked and walked and walked. Beginning at (A) Arlington National Cemetery, we visited the Kennedy’s gravesite, watched the guard change at the Tomb of the Unknowns, and snapped a few photos with the billowy pink blossoms.
It’s fun to see little Jonathan at 5 months do all of the same things Milo was doing not too long ago…like putting his hands in his mouth all the time!
Crossing the Memorial Bridge, we visited (B) Mr. Lincoln’s Memorial, along with hundreds of other people. I think this is my favorite memorial in DC. Something about the high, hollow hall with Lincoln’s inspiring speeches etched into the walls moves me.
We then stopped by the (C) Vietnam Memorial, listened in for a second as a Mom told an animated story of a family member whose name is on the wall. Then we visited the (D) WWII Memorial, admired the water feature and wall of stars, crossed over to the (E) Washington Monument, then on to the (F) Museum of American History. I showed Kristine my favorite exhibits: Julia Child’s Kitchen (of course!), the Star Spangled Banner, the Hall of First Lady’s Gowns, and the Pop Culture, including Dorothy’s Ruby Slippers. At the (G) Museum of Natural History we just bee-lined to the Gem Hall to see the Hope Diamond and the collection of incredibly huge and ridiculously glittery jewels. We agreed on a couple pieces that we wouldn’t mind adding to our own jewelry boxes;) Now, after 6 hours and almost 4 miles of walking and sight seeing we met Dave (H) while on our way to the White House. We got in the car, dropped him off at school, and decided we’ll see it tomorrow!!
These two were absolute troopers today. They both strolled and smiled and slept like seasoned tourists. K and I agree we feel blessed to be the moms of such good babies! And, the day wouldn’t have been complete without a little head banging from Milo. Sweet Jonathan is going to learn to block before he leaves!
